Late last month, KMEG covered the growing controversy over the proposed Main Street expansion in Sioux Center. They talked to residents concerned about the high costs and the threat to safety, both of which loom as long term negatives for the town if the expansion goes through.
According to a study done by the Iowa DOT in 2006 traffic is expected to increase beyond the current 3-lane capacity by 2025.
But in 2007 traffic flow dropped which is one reason some people want the road to stay the same.
In fact, the traffic volume is still far lower than the threshhold where congestion might begin to be a problem, and experts argue that the more lanes only adds to the problem.
